Overview

With over 20 acres of landscaped grounds, Andaz Scottsdale is an exceptionally unique resort which has stayed true to its original inspiration from concept through completion. For Andaz Scottsdale, the unique juxtaposition between art and landscape is the leading inspiration. The design reflects the innovative 1950s desert art scene influenced by architects, artists and graphic designers, including Alexander Girard, Frank Lloyd Wright and Paolo Solari. The rooms and grounds at Andaz Scottsdale are a reflection of their creative spirit – where color, line, and form all comingle and work in harmony with the natural surroundings.

Goals

The desert has long been a landscape of inspiration for artists. The extreme contrast of sun and shadow and the dream-like colors of a Sonoran sunset have beckoned artists to the American Southwest for decades. This unique juxtaposition between art and landscape is the artistic inspiration for Andaz. The design reflects the innovative 1950s desert art scene influenced by architects, artists and graphic designers, including Alexander Girard, Frank Lloyd Wright and Paolo Solari. The rooms and grounds at the Andaz Scottsdale are a reflection of their creative spirit - Color, line, and form all comingle and work in harmony with the natural surroundings.

The identity of Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Spa is also deeply entwined with Cattle Track Arts Compound. Opened in 1936, Cattle Track fosters artists, jewelers, potters, blacksmiths, printers, and performers to craft their works in an environment that prizes collaboration and creativity. Each guestroom contains original Cattle Track art and the Artists frequent the resort to create works, engage with guests, and share their stories. The project art is truly integral and was created by these artists, with their varying styles and media.

Process

Since the inception of the hotel, the project has been deeply influenced by the 1950s desert art scene - including Alexander Girard, Frank Lloyd Wright and Paolo Solari. This artistic inspiration led our team to the Cattle Track Arts Compound located in Scottsdale and created a unique partnership.

At the hotel, you'll find original Cattle Track art within guestrooms and on the restaurant's walls. Artists frequently visit the resort to create their works, engage with guests, and share their stories. Throughout the hotel, guests are invited to create their own work of art utilizing coloring pages, art easels and painting, photography, pottery, and more. Ultimately guests are given the opportunity to connect with art and discover their own creative spirit.

Guests are also welcomed to venture to Cattle Track for exclusive studio tours. The compound has been around even longer than Scottsdale itself, and artists like ceramist Mary van Dusen (the artist behind all of the great ceramic pieces in the restaurant and at the hotel) invite you into their studios so that you can see where the art at the hotel came from firsthand.

Additional Information

Located on 23 acres in the shadow of Camelback mountain the hotel includes 201 bungalow-style guest rooms situated in clusters, reminiscent of an artists’ colony connected by meandering pathways and communal courtyards with fire pits. A large pool and sundeck with a 12,000-square-foot spa facility and a fitness center; and more than 20,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space. In 2017 the hotel was named one of the best hotels in the world by Conde Nast Magazine and dubbed a “near perfect” luxury Sonoran getaway by Forbes Magazine.
