Overview

Startup Waco was looking for a way to recognize the individuals and organizations whose contribution and leadership make Startup Waco’s work possible. The Team at Startup Waco commissioned me to design a stunning art piece that showcased donor giving levels, allowing new donors to be added in the future.

Designed for flexibility, I created a pattern from geometric and branded shapes to allow the composition to evolve as more donors are added.

To accomplish this, I developed custom magnetic hardware to give me the ability to adapt the design, move elements around and give it a long life span in this leased space.

Goals

The overarching creative goals were to make a modular piece where the design can expand and be re-arranged over time as new donors are added.

Process

To create an adaptable design, I created 3 unique shapes that related to each giving legacy, a key if you will. Adding in a brand shape and round shape to balance the design.

Each donor tile was laser cut and hand finished with a blackening agent to achieve the dark metal-gray appearance to compliment the facilities existing architectural work.

This piece was mounted with a custom magnetic hardware solution, that holds each tile in place, making a versatile and moveable sculpture installation.

An acrylic sign was added to the left of the piece, explaining the donor story, and identifying the giving key.

To complete the installation, I collaborated with an electrical installer to add additional track lighting and dimmer switches, to allow the artwork to be lit independently.
