Overview
Frederick Douglass stands as one of my heroes—a man who not only liberated himself from slavery but dedicated his life to eradicating it altogether. In my artistic tribute, I sought to capture the essence of Douglass, infusing the depiction with beautiful colors that resonate with the electrifying power of his presence. At John Cabrillo, a quaint neighborhood elementary school nestled in diversity, we strive to cultivate a safe and nurturing environment through strong partnerships with families and the community. As a Leader in Me school, we are committed to fostering both academic and social-emotional growth. Our school extends opportunities beyond the classroom, offering a range of after-school programs and enriching experiences, including a thriving sports program.
Goals
The incorporation of commissioned artwork into this project was crucial as it narrated the powerful story of Frederick Douglass and his remarkable journey from slavery to freedom. My contribution to the overall design was conveyed through carefully chosen colors. I intentionally crafted a design that exuded an electrifying feel to mirror the strength and impact of his character and persona.
Process
The collaborative process unfolded with me taking on the roles of lead designer and artist, engaging in a dynamic partnership with Wide Open Walls, the principal, and the faculty of John Cabrillo Elementary School in Sacramento, California.
