Overview

Materials include stainless steel frame and stained glass Dimensions: L 28′ x W 10′ x H 18′. The sculptures steel figures and stained-glass components were produced on computer-programmed laser cutting machines. ColorPlay is the Summa Health’s campus site welcoming identifier.

Goals

Our Goal was to create a signature entry landmark Public Art Sculpture for Summa Health’s new main campus. A site-specific identifying sculpture that instills in viewers a sense of joy, and identity, belonging and attachment. Summa’s Beacon of Wellbeing draws its inspiration, meaning and forms from Summa’s namesake - reflecting the body of knowledge, values and multidisciplined team that bring wholeness and wellbeing to the Hospital’s community.

The sculpture’s contemporary stainless-steel figures celebrate the coming together of people across generations, disciplines and perspectives. Their uplifting movement creates feelings of joy and support for Summa and the community that nurtures the health and wellbeing of all its members
Summa’s ColorSphere symbolizes the broad spectrum of knowledge held by the Hospitals team and employed in the care and wellbeing of patients and their care-givers.

Process

The collaborative process on this project involved the owner’s rep, building and landscape architects, general and sub-contractors. The site was surveyed with the architects, to determine the best visual location, free from below grade infrastructure and utilities. Viewing angles and the sculpture’s elevation were selected based on maximizing the viewer’s 360 degree experience.
To assure perfect installation, once fabrication was complete the site surveyors came to the fabrication shop and pulled the as-built foundation coordinates that were then laid out on the Hospital’s installation site. During the installation Stephen and Judith worked with Summa’s marketing team to produce the Hospital’s promotional video.
