Stuart Williams’ monumental site-specific installations have mesmerized thousands and drawn global critical acclaim. His focus is the intersection of technology, nature and humanity. Holding a degree in architecture, he has an intimate understanding of context, scale, and materials, as he spearheads challenging projects, leading teams of technicians to bring ground-breaking, evocative concepts to life. His most ambitious installation, Luminous Earth Grid, was set in rolling green hills 50 miles north of San Francisco. Sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts, it was a vast array of 1,680 energy-efficient lamps sweeping over an expanse equal to 8 football fields. Said Williams, “I see this project as a poetic statement about the potential harmony between technology and nature.” Peter Selz, Curator at MoMA, said of the project: “It emanated a sense of the romantic sublime with its aura of surprise and wonder.” In 2015 Williams installed “Breath of Life/Dresden” at the historic Dresden Cathedral to mark the 70th observance of the bombing of Dresden in World War II. By bathing the facade in waves of uplighting that continuously rose and fell at the pace of human breath, he made the Cathedral appear to breathe. Said Williams, “In a city where tens of thousands suffocated in a firestorm, I think the vision of one of Dresden’s most treasured landmarks appearing to breathe is deeply moving.” A documentary film is now in development. Williams has been the recipient of grants and commissions from the U.S. Embassy in Berlin, City of Dresden, Pacific Gas & Electric, the LEF Foundation, the Rene and Veronica di Rosa Foundation, an anonymous foundation in New York, among others. He’s been an invited speaker at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the University of California, Davis, and the Kurt Vonnegut Museum, Indianapolis. His work has been published around the world in Art in America, Public Art Review, Abitare (Milan), LIFE Magazine, France Soir (Paris) and Kunstforum International (Cologne). Williams’ work was recently featured in “Art Installations: A Visual Guide,” Roads Publishing (Dublin, Ireland). The publisher describes the book as “a visual journey and exploration of the most significant and groundbreaking highlights of installation art since the 1960s.” Williams lives and works in New York City.
