Janavi Mahimtura Folmsbee was born and raised in Mumbai, India, in a home overlooking the Indian Ocean. She is a 2009 graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She currently lives and works in Houston, Texas, USA. Mahimtura Folmsbee sits on the board of Fotofest and the Sanctuary Advisory Council for the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary appointed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration out of Galveston, Texas. Having shown work in Mumbai, Beijing, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Dubai, and the United States Mahimtura Folmsbee has a global following, with work in important collections all over the world. Her works have been featured in international fairs including KunstRAI, Art Rotterdam, the Indian Contemporary Art Fair, Texas Contemporary Art Fair, and ARTE Dubai. Mahimtura Folmsbee has created monumental public art throughout Houston and India, large enough to be seen on Google Earth. Her public works also include an important commission from the Red Cross Society in Mumbai, India. She collaborates and works with marine organizations like the Galveston Bay Foundation, Correa Lab, MAAR Alliance, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Coral Restoration Foundation to help preserve our oceans. Recently, having created art used in scientific papers published in the Global Change Journal. Mahimtura Folmsbee has collaborated with organizations such as the University of Houston, for their Women’s Studies programs. A leader in her community, she is the first South Asian Artist to be a part of the Houston Civic Art Collection in the Houston Airport Art Collection. Her art practice appeals to broad audiences and educates them about the marine world. She also created the official artwork for the 2019 Houston Chevron Marathon, the 2017 Super Bowl, and the FIFA World Cup 2024 through Crown Castle.
