Creative Revolutionaries Keynote: Remembrance as Resistance: Preserving Black Narratives

Sponsored by Panasonic Connect

Artist activist Charmaine Minniefield will share her Praise House Project, a site-specific public art series that uplifts Black narratives as an act of resistance to erasure in order to imagine a new freedom. "Praise houses were small wooden structures, initially on slave plantations, used for gathering and worship. It was in these secret safe spaces that the Ring Shout was performed, a traditional African-American movement practice taught to me by my great-grandmother. The Ring Shout was reborn in the Western hemisphere as resistance to laws intended to dismantle African identity and rule by community. This full-body rhythmic prayer was performed as congregants would stomp or shout upon the wooden floors, creating a communal drum, secretly preserving their African cultural identity and traditions - all while remembering freedom. This work recalls that prayer."

Charmaine Minniefield – The Praise House Project

After winning a juried competition with substantial public input, the artist Hank Willis Thomas (with site design by Mass Design Group), the creative team faced unique challenges -- including an interruption because of the unprecedented Covid-19 public health crisis -- and opportunities. Please join a discussion with the artist’s public art manager, project coordinator, and legal counsel as they highlight some of the business complexities and technical challenges that were identified and overcome to complete this incredible monument dedicated to conversation, education, and reflection on the racial and economic justice ideals of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Coretta Scott King.
