Overview
Stone 40 was conceived as a site-specific commission for an exhibition at Chatsworth House, UK 2022 – “Radical Horizons”. A site was selected that gave the sculpture an elevated view of the landscape below which was frequently filled by sheep and deer which inhibit the grounds. I wanted to create a moment of elevation and send people on a little adventure into flow on their way to the perfect perch to take in the landscape below. The effect became that visitors could engage in a deeper level of absorption and communication with the landscape.
The form was inspired by experiencing Joseph Paxton’s 1842 rock garden which is featured on the grounds of Chatsworth House.
Goals
Creating a shape that would enhance the visitor's experience when absorbing the landscape.
