Overview
Migration Grid #6 is from a body of work inspired by research at UC Irvine and U Mass Medical School that found Monarch butterflies migrate following sky grids made of UV light. This grid is made of porcelain, is 9 ft wide, and integrated into the building, floating at an angle in a corner where glass and cement meet in the 4th floor atrium of the Natural Sciences II building, UC Irvine.
Goals
This work was one of many exhibited in the atrium along with microscopic photos of butterfly eyes, mounted butterflies of the kind studied, and the equipment used to study the effects of light. All the works were integrated into the atrium, and at the end of the show, the evolutionary biology department purchased the artwork. Spanning a corner was the main goal, with sky as backdrop. The metal window frames and wire architectural accents on the outside stair case played with the sculpture as grids overlaid on grids.
Process
The exhibition was a collaboration of the scientists and myself. The artwork and placement of it were my doing.
