Overview

I was commissioned by the City of Dana Point to work with Yvonne English, owner of Legends Landscape Architect. Together we worked to create the fountain that sits in the middle of Dana Point in La Plaza Park. I designed and created the sea life mosaics and sculpted surfers. The dimensions are approximately 8 feet wide by 7 feet high. Three mosaic panels feature cast and fused glass depicting local undersea life, with the other three panels displaying bronze relief sculptures of famous surfers in the wave.

Goals

My goal in creating the artwork was to celebrate the local history of the city, undersea life, as well as the pioneers of surfing, which is where many of the sport's icons and entrepreneurs got their start.

Process

Yvonne's vast experience and talent designing fountains and pools helped to provide the design of the fountain's structure to optimize spaces in the park area. Her collaboration was invaluable to me as an artist, as it provided a canvas for me to apply my pictorial glass images. We also worked together to create a wave effect with the waterfall to present an opportunity for the surfers to be "locked into" a wave.

Additional Information

They say that the only thing that will be left hundreds of years from now will be bronze and glass. Those are the materials that I work with.
