Overview

Art Design Consultants of Cincinnati, Ohio, commissioned me to create a signature sculpture for the Columbus, Ohio, lobby of Pwc (PricewaterhouseCoopers). Epic Swoon (67″ x 17″ x 13″) is printed on an 8-foot-tall 3D printer in PLA solid resin.

Goals

ADC was charged with selecting the art for the lobby. Although the client wanted to work primarily with Ohio artists, the design team was intrigued by the possibility of having an unusual and topical signature sculpture in the Pwc lobby, reflecting the company's forward thinking.

Process

Despite the physical distance, I worked closely with the owner of ADC and her staff, providing close-up sample images of various available filaments and proposed designs. Once the final color was selected, I created the artwork in two parts to achieve the 5-1/2-foot-tall height of the sculpture, titled Epic Swoon. Rather than try to match the two sections, I decided to create a complementary pedestal in a contrasting color filament, making what could have been a challenge into a benefit. Printing the two sections required careful planning and execution in both CAD and 3D printing specific software. The sculpture took more than four days to print. Using one of the companies I regularly work with, I had the finished sculpture shipped to Columbus for installation. Although I usually include installation instructions and / or videos, this piece was simple enough to assemble without them.

Additional Information

This is the largest 3D-printed sculpture I have created thus far. My 8-foot-tall Cerberus 3D Gigante printer, which I had built for me, can print up to 48" tall (4 feet).
