This Call to Artists opportunity is part of the creation of the William Lanson Memorial Plaza. The Plaza aims to honor the life and accomplishments of William Lanson (1776-1851), a former slave and one of the earliest black entrepreneurs in Connecticut. The City and the Amistad Committee are anticipating a sculpture or functional work of public art that honors an admired, important and accomplished figure in New Haven’s African American history. We hope for an engaging work of art that responds to the landscape and the other proposed features of the memorial plaza and invokes the spirit and influence of William Lanson. Artists and designers of diverse backgrounds and/or who have a cultural, historic, and/or artistic connection to African American history are strongly encouraged to apply.
