USF St. Petersburg will commission an artist based in the St.Petersburg-Tampa Bay region to design and fabricate a peace pole for its campus. Peace poles across the nation and world and are generally erected after a tragic or solemn event in order to offer a memorial space, a space of conflict resolution, and place for gathering or contemplation. They are a symbol of peace, solidarity, or solace during difficult times. The deadline for submission is May 13. The selected artist will be notified by early June, after which university contracting processes may take two to four weeks. Project inauguration will occur September or early October. USF St. Petersburg has designated a space for the peace pole in a semi-covered outdoor location next to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library. It is intended as a convening space for students, staff, faculty and the community, as well as a place of respite and study. It is a peaceful location looking out at the Tampa Bay Harbor.
