City of Melbourne is transforming University Square, and public art has been identified as a key component of the revived space. The initial curatorial vision, developed by Robert Owen in collaboration with the City of Melbourne, highlighted a number of important themes that artists are able to respond to. These include: Aboriginal connection to the site, either through the potential for storytelling and discovery, or the relationship between law and lore. The concept of transformation in the ever-evolving civic context around the University of Melbourne. City of Melbourne is seeking artist responses to University Square. Permanent public art for this project could take a variety of forms and be from any creative practice area. It is open to artists to include interactive components or new technology as part of a concept’s form.
