The city, Virginia’s Public Art Program and the Elizabeth River Trail Foundation seek an artist or team of artists to design, fabricate and install an artwork for the Elizabeth River Trail in Larchmont. The Elizabeth River Trail is an urban bike and pedestrian trail that runs along the waterfront from the Port of Virginia, through downtown Norfolk and east toward Virginia Beach, according to the foundation’s website. The artwork could be placed anywhere along the trailhead running from the Lafayette River, to Hampton Boulevard, to the area behind the Larchmont Library. There are 13 like-new, concrete bases left from a previous public art project that can be used, according to the news release. Artists have the option of placing 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional artwork on the bases to “create a sense of movement, a journey or story-telling.” There is a $50,000 budget for artwork design, fabrication and installation. The deadline to submit a proposal is 2 p.m. on April 18.
