The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County (NC) Public Art Commission is seeking an artist to design and create a permanent artwork to honor the life, spirit, and legacy of Larry Leon Hamlin (1948-2007). Hamlin was the founder and director of the North Carolina Black Repertory Company, the state’s first professional Black theater company founded in 1979, and the National Black Theatre Festival (NBTF), which has been held biennially in Winston-Salem, NC since 1989. Both institutions have served as models for other theater companies and arts organizations around the world. Hamlin was known nationally and internationally known for his profound contributions to Black theater in America and the NBTF continues today as a showcase for the best of Black theater, drawing more than 40,000 people to the city for each festival.
