Overview

Wonderlust, was a 4 month exhibition running from January 10th through April 16th, 2023 at the Myrtle Beach Art Museum in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The twenty works installed were a combination of mixed-media paintings but primarily the largest installments were the rug tufted wall pieces.
The work in Wonderlust was created over the past three years and veers between the recognizable and the abstract. The imagery is derived from the physicality of the world but is guided by the subconscious. Reiss-McCormack explores how abstraction gives form to things residing in and imprinted on our subconscious. Working in a wide range of media, moving from textile and printmaking to painting and mixed media, the artist uses the constraints of each medium to intercede on one another. The structure of collage allows for play and multiple points-of-view, creating a channel to a subconscious world. The structure for these latest works relies heavily on the imprint of organic shapes and forms derived from nature.

Goals

The larger fiber pieces filled the entire wall allowing the viewer a more immersive experience while viewing the paintings. The larger fiber pieces are of a scale where the viewing experience is more visceral.

Process

I work heavily in different media which really guides the direction of the work.
The works were curated by the museum and installed to highlight the works and create an atmosphere where one viewing felt immersed in the pieces and gained a better understanding of the entire body of work.
