Overview
Widely recognized as a “must-see” for visitors to Calgary, Wonderland generates a high level of engagement from around the world. Simply walking into the head and seeing the complex curvatures of the mesh and unique interdimensional perspective gives people a sense of awe and intrigue. The sculpture stands 40′ tall, and consists of intricately bent steel rod, coated in white.
Goals
The project was commissioned by the owner as a feature sculpture for the entry plaza of THE BOW tower.
Process
Our in-house digital model was used to create approximately 350 EPS templates that served as the forms which the ¾ inch (19 millimeter) and 7/8 inch (22 millimeter) hand-bent steel could be placed into the grooves and pockets to ensure geometrical accuracy for assembly.
Each weld was visually inspected, with the majority of the welds mag particle or UT tested with Heavy also developing a first of its kind weld and inspection procedure for the approximately 12,000 welds that were required. To add to the flawless nature of the sculpture, the base ring was aligned with the grout lines of the plaza to ensure an immaculate finish.
