Overview
This project is a marquee to a memorial. The current sculpture has a dimension of 23″ x 22″ x 22″. The materials are concrete, steel and plaster cast. This project is a marquee for a 5' x 5' x 7' memorial. I am currently seeking commissions for the large scale project.
Goals
The integration of design was tremendously important for this project. The memorial had to convey not only despair and helplessness but also a clear picture of being incarcerated.
Process
I received a grant for building the marquee from a social justice organization, they also helped me find a fiscal sponsor for grant application purposes. When I started building the marquee I received help from my husband, who is also an artist and a fellow friend and artist who helped me welding the project together.
Additional Information
As an artist and activist, I feel the need to thoughtfully engage the viewer and encourage them to stand against injustice and inhumane conditions. I am merging activism with my art as we are at a point in history where we cannot stand merely by as passive onlookers anymore. I am still seeking funding, ideally a commission for the large scale memorial. My marquee is currently in an exhibition in Connecticut.
