Overview
This project was commissioned for a wedding in Napa, California. The bride is an artist, and the wedding was art-themed. Each of the wedding events had decor inspired by different periods and genres of art; i.e., the rehearsal dinner had an impressionist theme. The yarnbomb piece was for the wedding brunch which had a street-art theme. The tree was a giant redwood with a 17' circumference. The piece was 6' high.
Goals
The wedding and the tree were in Napa, Yarn Bombing Los Angeles, the design team, were in Los Angeles. We had the measurements of the tree and one photograph to guide us. The piece needed to be easily installed and removed without causing any damage to the tree, nails were out of the question. And it needed to be installed by persons unknown to the design team, so it needed to be easy. Illustrated instructions were created to be included in the shipping box.
Process
I was the lead artist and contact person for the client. I conceived the initial design concept and hanging apparatus. Execution of the design and fabrication was a collaboration of the Yarn Bombing Los Angeles core group, which includes David Orozco, Judy Richards, Darlyn Susan Yee, and Carol Zou. Work sessions proceeded similar to quilting bees, with all members working on different areas of the piece at the same time.
