Overview

Victory over the sun #15 is a site intervention to be viewed both from the busy alley through the windows, and the inside, offering different perspectives between night and daytime. It activates and intervenes in an existing, furnished, space in disuse and surrounding surfaces. The passerby is enveloped in a playful set of elements like plexiglass, wood, arranged to project light, color, and movement. After dusk, 3 projections on glassine paper and textile will bleed out on the next door walls.

Goals

This intervention was commissioned by NO VACANCY, City of Miami Beach + Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority (MBVCA) as part of a series of site interventions in the public space during ART BASEL Miami 2021.

Process

By using light, color, and shade as materiality Monika creates a mesmerizing experience expanding from the space into the alleyway, integrating the traffic generated by the Betsy Orb. Monika is able to create a landscape, an emotional universe, into which the viewer can immerse and have a sense of belonging. The fragments, reflections, and light fall speak to us about the power of community, interrelationships, perspectives, and dialogue.

Some shapes refer directly to the Bauhaus typeface created by Josef Albers, as abstract reminders of core values in colorful compositions, brought to life by Monika in the space. The experiential piece is ephemeral like we are, it is evolving like we are, it has specific needs as we do, it speaks diversely and connects to others differently depending on their point of view.

The title of the work makes reference to the Russian Futurist opera that premiered in 1913 with the same name Victory over the Sun. The opera has become notable as the event where Malevich made his first Black Square, as part of a design for a curtain.

Additional Information

MONIKA BRAVO
I am a multi-disciplinary artist born in Bogotá, Colombia. I studied fashion design in Rome & Paris and photography in London and NYC. I moved to Miami Beach, in 2020. I embody my own perspective and no longer seek “truth”; my vision is a synthesis of all disciplines, guiding me to manifest a reality that matches my desire to evolve. I create mesmerizing environments for public spaces, intimate interpersonal interactions through astrological readings, and meaningful spaces for individual and communal development through talks and workshops. I enjoy directing and producing diverse projects, from complex multi-media installations and public art commissions to artists’ books, textile design, and community workshops – thus, I see no boundaries between the applied and fine arts. I thrive in situations where I am working with limitations and constraints, creating opportunities for innovative projects that serve communities for years to come. I enjoy challenging myself with new technologies and materials, discovering new ways of manifesting my ideas to fit the needs of the location.
