Overview
Vanished Berlin Wall (22m × 3.5m × 0.3m) was installed in front of the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin. Artist spent 2 years in Berlin to actualize this project.
Goals
Eunsook Lee's black light installation incorporated the names of 5,000 Korean separated family members; it was installed in front of the Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of German reunification, and consisted of numerous transparent parts that lit up the once formidable area that divided the country. Design itself is exactly the same as actual Berlin wall to recognize the history of Berlin.
Process
"Vanished Berlin Wall" was installed historical and touristic area of Berlin; therefore, safety was very heavy issue. Moreover, recreating wall itself was very painful to artist herself.
