Client: The City of Conway, Arkansas

Overview

Unity’ is a contemporary stainless-steel sculpture standing 22′ H. The artwork was commissioned by the City of Conway, Arkansas as the center piece for the new MLK Square Park.

Goals

The city wanted a dynamic design that would be interesting from all angles as it would be seen from the different vantage points throughout the park and from the adjacent streets. The park is a tribute to the great Martin Luther King Jr. so I wanted to create an abstract interpretation that exhibits he importance of togetherness. I incorporated an arch to reference the MLK quote, "We shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice." The twisting forms curve around a sphere at the base which represent the universe. Twisting upwards the embrace the arch and from some angles appear to support both the arch and one another.
