Overview

This artwork, inspired by the interconnected scales of scientific study, illustrates how micro and macro research are intrinsically linked. Drawing from Charles and Ray Eames’ celebrated short film, Powers of Ten, the behavior of electrons orbiting a carbon atom parallels the movements of moons, planets and stars in the cosmos. This fundamental simultaneity of varying physical and biological scales inspired the creation of Synapse.

Goals

A primary goal of this artwork was to create a sculpture that harmonizes with the unique atrium space and its undulating boundaries in the Lewis Sciences Building. This monumental piece not only spans several floors of the building but also symbolizes the connective behavior of molecular bonds. Various disciplines can relate to its network formation, and each floor of the Lewis Building interacts with the artwork in a unique way. The sculpture's branching pattern and expansiveness evoke curiosity from both inside and outside the building.
