Overview
The mural shows state symbols of Idaho and historic and cultural elements of Boise. The mural is painted on the Jefferson Place Building in the very heart of the city.
The mural features elements of the native flora and fauna of southwestern Idaho, as well as state symbols and elements of history and culture of the area, like elements of Boiseās architecture, and of the Basque people. Most plants and flowers shown on the mural are native to southwestern Idaho. Fauna representatives are all native to the area as well. Colorful, realistic imagery is intertwined with graphic black and white drawings, connecting present and past, adding diversity and richness to the composition, making the mural interesting to look at again and again, while always discovering something new.
Goals
The goal of the mural was not only to decorate and beautify the Jefferson Place Building but to educate the public, greet the people of Boise and its visitors, attract people to come closer, explore the intricate details, recognize familiar birds and flowers, and inspire people to learn something new.
With my design, the goal was not to overpower the beautiful dĆ©cor of the front of the historic Jefferson Place building but to decorate the back wall with whimsical floral elements, intertwine and harmoniously embed the mural into the buildingās architecture.
Process
This project started as an open international call for artists in the summer of 2020. My design was chosen as a winner and in spring of 2021, I painted the mural directly on the walls of the building using exterior acrylic paint.
