Overview
The digital age has transformed human interaction. Career, dating, lifestyle. SURFACE X is an interactive installation focusing on the moment when the self-created digital and our physical identities collide. Like our digital identity, SURFACE X appears large and impressive from a distance. The interactive installation is made up of 35 black umbrellas that form a single, spherical body 3.5 meters in diameter. The umbrellas represent an impenetrable shield, protecting the inside from unwanted looks. However, once a person approaches SURFACE X, the umbrellas immediately shy away and close within milliseconds.

Process
Picaroon started this project three years ago after Rebecca Gischel (Artist@Picaroon) came up with the Idea, Johannes Holzmair and Marius Bungart (Engineers@Picaroon) joined to plan, test and prototype. After the first prototype was ready, Sebastian Walter (Product Designer@Picaroon) and Franz Gischel (Electrical Engineer@Picaroon) also joined. After Rebecca Gischel finished the programming, we exhibited the artwork together with a photographer (Katja Broemer) and a cameraman (Oliver Koeppel).
