Overview
A custom wall and ceiling mosaic for a bathroom in a private home. The homeowners’ vision for the home was to “feel like vacation every day”. I took color inspiration from the Mediterranean Sea, using beautiful aquas, teals, periwinkles, and indigos.
Borrowing from 2 masterpieces, The Great Wave Off Kanagawa by Hokusai, and The Starry Night by Vincent VanGogh, this mosaic installation draws the eye along the crashing waves, and through the swirling skies, creating an oasis of foaming surf and deep sky.
Executed in stained glass, vitreous glass tile, mirror, beach glass, glass gems, and a vintage Czech glass button to achieve the depth of color found in water, and the sparkle of stars in a night sky.
Approximately 96 square feet.
Goals
My goal for this mosaic mural was to create an environment of escape for the clients. Where they could relax in the tub and gaze at the dark sky and crashing waves, and hopefully be transported to the beach on a warm, starry night.
Process
I worked closely with the builder and the designer on this custom installation. The builder created the arched ceiling over the tub in the mosaic backer board I prefer to use. The designer was the person who urged me to create this entire tub surround. She was helpful in coordinating the bathroom tile design and installation, and electrical fixture selection, for me to work around.
