PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Art glass panels are installed in sixteen individual shelters along the SunRunner bus line.
Two panels per shelter.
The colorful glass brightens the shelter area and creates a welcoming space for the SunRunner patron.
The tropical color and imagery are visual ‘love letter’ to St Petersburg.

The shelters are sited along a straight stretch of road, and the art glass is visually designed in a continuous horizontal mural format.
Each shelter has a unique design, specifically inspired by the surrounding area, utilizing my hundreds of photographs of the area.
Each shelter is conceived as a unique ‘front porch’ to the neighborhood where it stands.

While designed in a mural format for continuity, each individual shelter is unique to it’s neighborhood, and
incorporates my photos of the neighboring area landmarks, including architectural details and local landmarks.

Goals

I was responsible for the design and fabrication of the glass panel design within the shelters.
The company Decamil was responsible for the rest of the shelter design.

The 16 shelters are sited along a straight stretch of road, and the art glass is visually designed in a continuous, horizontal mural format. Each of the shelter glasses has a unique design, specifically inspired by the surrounding area, utilizing hundreds of photographs that I took of the area.
Each shelter is conceived as a unique ‘front porch’ to the neighborhood where it stands.

While designed in a mural format for continuity, each individual shelter is specific to its neighborhood,
and incorporates my photos of the area landmarks, including architectural details, local landmarks,
distinctive flora and linear interpretations of distinctive building design.
A mix of abstract and representational elements. The elements that make each neighborhood unique.

One viewer referred to these elements as Easter Eggs. The patron does not have to recognize these details to
enjoy the colorful glass design, but it can deepen the experience for those who do.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

I took between 200-500 photographs of each of the 16 neighborhoods.
These photographs provide the design elements for each shelter glass.

Laminated glass requires two panels of glass, offering the opportunity of two surfaces for frit printing.
Each side can be printed with different imagery, which overlaps the other side.
Utilizing this opportunity, I have added details to the Patron Side of the shelter glass, where the bus rider sits.
The patron is treated to additional visual details which are not seen on the Street Side of the glass.
A bit of a secret garden for the SunRunner patron.

Additional Information

The following Artist’s Notes represent my approach to each shelter: Shelter 27 This shelter is located near Mirror Lake. The area around the lake is a visual gem. with some of my favorite building facades in the city. Streamlined contemporary style sits next to old, ornate facades and Mid Century Modern apartments. The lake is also surrounded by a lush green landscape with an abundance of birds. Delightful architectural details abound, include carved marble owl ornaments. garlands and urns. Arches everywhere- arched entryways and arched windows. There is a also a great little pocket of old Florida, where the neighborhood borders the highway. Many restaurants and shops are in the area, along with the The Morean Art Center and the Chihuly Glass Collection. Many social services are housed nearby. The upper right corner of the glass design echoes the Art Deco facade on the nearby corner. I took 291 photos of the area to use as elements in this glass design.
