Overview
Based on the flocking behavior apparent in animal populations, this piece celebrates the beauty of natural systems. Initial form finding studies in murmurations of starlings and schools of sardines aided in identifying the horizontal flow of the finished piece. The 20′ wide, 13′ tall piece is comprised of 7,000 lbs. of locally source beach rock, suspended on 246 individual cables. The piece is supported by a steel structure that was surgically assembled into an existing architectural alcove.
Goals
Per the building's art concept developed by Ron Miriello, the piece was required to respond to a phenomenon found in the natural world. In addition, the piece had to be installed into an already constructed space, so being having a self-supporting structure was imperative.
