Overview

Stone 7 is the first pathway in my Stone series. It’s made up of 7 floating 500lbs 250kg stones suspended from wire ropes attached to slender steel columns. The surface of the top stone is just about 8’6″ above the ground. participants are invited to take a walk over the stones and find their balance on each one as they make their way over. This process puts a participant into an introspective state similar to meditation or yoga. The required focus blocks out all distractions and creates a moment of presence.

Goals

Process

After envisioning and designing the installation I traveled to South Africa to source all materials and find a fabricator to produce the steel supports. Stones were forced directly from the land of the AfrikaBurn event.

Additional Information

This project was produced for AfrikaBurn 2019 as a grant-funded artwork, it was then purchased by Victoria Nel and is permanently installed on her land at the base of Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. This project is a predecessor to Stone 27 which I created at Burning Man 2019.
