Overview
Spirit Rising is a 26 foot tall stainless steel, kinetic sculpture activated by the wind. The concept was inspired by the neighborhood, a community looking to the future. The foundation of the sculpture is a 3-dimensional map in the shape of an Archimedian Spire.
Goals
The goals of the project were to create a piece of art for the neighborhood surrounding Southside Park, a neighborhood that working to rise up. The wind activates this sculpture, and the form ever climbing upward. The art is meant to inspire hope.
Process
I worked in collaboration with community centers and churches in the area to gather community input. Together we created a theatrical workshop with the community to gather perspective about their hopes for the neighborhood and the significance of the art work. We created a short film to document the process.
