Overview
Solis is an interactive installation that allows users to manipulate light in a playful way. The piece rotates and spins upon itself like a gyro scope that allows one to create a new piece of art every time they engage with the work. This permanent sculpture creates not only an iconic landmark for the space in which it is located, but allows the users to have a connection to the landscape in which it resides. At night the piece illuminates and glows as a beacon within this Suwanee, GA community.
Goals
The goals for this project were to spark community activity and social interaction within an underutilized space of the newly built community. The project was designed to allow the community to manipulate the environment around them through the reflecting and refracting of light with the installation. Not only does the changing environment around the piece allow for an ever-changing installation, but the user can also manipulate the piece in a variety of ways creating endless possibilities. This moment of open-ended play creates a timeless landmark within the landscape it is placed.
Process
The project was commissioned by the developer Terwilliger Pappas to create a landmark of activity within the new development they were creating. The piece is placed at the edge of the development within the landscape to create a connection between the built and natural environment of the community.
