Overview
Materials were carefully considered for their minimal waste and maximum re-usability. Temporary construction fencing is the structural core that supports approximately 1000 CDs and 200 solar lanterns made from re-used water bottles designed by local school children. 45'x6'
Goals
Solar Shimmer was one of three large-scale, solar-powered art installations that were commissioned for the first solar art festival in the MENA region, Solar Art Festival Qatar. Our goals were to work efficiently with materials while creating a solar-powered art installation that was large in scale with great visual impact and with an interactive and educational component.
Process
This project was a collaboration between Eleonora Nicoletti and Anthony Castronovo. The concept, technical planning, and engineering were all collaboratively developed by Nicoletti and Castronovo. The collaboration was done entirely online and via email until arriving on-site in Doha, Qatar to install. Qatar Solar Technologies was the sponsor of the event and provided excellent management and personnel throughout the design process and in to the final exhibition. Workshops were developed to include 200 local and international school children in the construction of the project.
