Overview
Designed for the Chilliwack branch of Vancity credit union, ''Side by Side'' is a back lit welded wire and polyester fabric suspended installation. Using my unique''fabric burning'' technique and photocopies on acetate, I created a sort of quilt, representing diverse aspects of the community: recreation, education, agriculture life, history, indigenous presence, etc.
Goals
There was extensive consultation with the public, archives and diverse community groups to find the right images to show community life. My commitment to making art in a sustainable way coincided very well with Vancity's values. All the steel wire used for the support structure is recycled form a local precast concrete plan. Half of the fabric is also reclaimed from former projects.
Process
I acted as the designer, researcher and fabricator. The final work was installed by the hired installation team. The light wall was designed specially for the artwork.
Additional Information
''Side by Side'' is my first public commission. I welcome the opportunity to create more textile and steel wire sculptural installations with integrated lighting.
