Overview
A flute crashing into Saturn is a piece commissioned by a professor of astronomy. It was to a gift to his wife, who is a Flautist, for their anniversary. He asked that the piece reflect his and her keenest interests coming together just as their lives had.
Saturn Fluted is made of bronze and steel; it stands about 3’ high and 2.5’ in diameter. Its base allows it to turn slightly on its axis if a different view is desired.
Goals
The client wanted the inclusion of his favorite planet (Saturn) and his wife’s instrument (Flute) combined in the design. It needed to display the coming together of their essences. It seemed to me that just as two people blend who they are when they marry, there is also a collision. The Flute crashing into Saturn represents both the merging of their spirits and the collision. This merging and collision of their essences was the central theme of the piece.
