Stephen Wise Free Synagogue
Overview
The rooftop at Stephen Wise Free Synagogue serves as a garden oasis for congregants, as well as a playground for the pre-school children. We were asked to replace the existing playground equipment with sculptural elements that would answer both needs.
Goals
At Reggio Emilia Schools children learn through discovery. Our task was to create interactive activities that were open ended so children could explore cause and effect, and also to provide physical challenges.
The Water Machine provides children with opportunities for discovering the principles of water through its multi-tiered pools, waterfall elements, changeable channels and spouts, crank shoots and pumps.
The Climbing Structure includes a net climb, a ring climber, monkey bars, ladders, a fireman’s pole and a rope swing.
Process
We worked with Lori Schneider, the Director of the school, to develop the designs for Rooftop Play.
