A permanent outdoor sculpture, Rising Sun invites viewers to notice change over time. Inspired by my interest in the solar cycles this work creates a sense of calm for viewers–a breath of fresh air as they take a moment to notice the wonders of color. As the sunlight shifts throughout the day, the piece reacts to each change interacting with the sunrise and sunset.
Expanding on previous ideas and working with real world limitations in creating a piece for the outdoors, I wanted to maintain an ephemeral quality with the shifts in light through time. The colored shadows created through the natural light hitting the glass alter the work as viewers encounter it from different angles and at different times of the day. Rising Sun exists in conversation with the environment around it and invites audiences to understand the work not only visually, but with their desire to interact, to touch, to exist in concert with the artwork as it transforms. To me a successful piece is one that people want to touch, they want to understand it with more senses than just their eyes.
