Overview
Red Tree; Stainless Steel; 28' x 16' diameter; I submitted a maquette to a jury who decided to exhibit the finished sculpture in a park and on grass. It is located by a museum in a very busy and prestigious section of Chicago.
Goals
The location directly on grass, in a very open space called for a vibrant dynamic sculpture that everyone could relate to. Red Tree was located on a way that integrated it with the green tree around it in this park. The brilliant red is very welcoming and sings with joy.
Process
Because of it's size and location directly on grass, the engineering of the sculpture had to include a very heavy base which ended up weighing six thousand pounds alone using three quarter thick stainless steel section on the outer perimeter. This also stabilized the sculpture against extreme wins and weather.
Additional Information
Red Tree is very popular and has withstood extreme midwestern weather. These red sculptures are greatly respected. Even in very compromises locations, there has been no graffiti on any of them.
