Overview

Two adult Red Shouldered Hawks with a nest in a tree are depicted in the piece. One hawk is near the nest and the second is landing on the tree. The tree itself is about 20″ feet with several limbs and a representational canopy. The piece is made of core10 steel sheets and rods with some powder coating on the hawks and canopy. The project was designed to be the first of several sculptural pieces celebrating various flora and fauna of the reserve. This piece was placed at the confluence of several hiking paths in recognition of the pair of Red Shouldered Hawks that live on the reserve. As a side note, on the day of installation, both Red Shouldered Hawks were circling the area, riding the updrafts.

Goals

The project was conceived and designed to be the first of several sculptural pieces celebrating various flora and fauna of the reserve. The scope of the project is to combine art with a natural setting: to give visitors the ability to experience not only the actual life in the environment, but also an artist’s conception of the same. This piece was placed at the confluence of several hiking paths in recognition of the pair of Red Shouldered Hawks that live on the reserve.
