Overview
Rainhive is created from over 1700 pieces of hand-sculpted resin. Commissioned by 2nd Wave Development for their Asbury property in Florida, this artwork resides in the main foyer to welcome visitors and staff. A combination of clear, frosted, pearl, cream, and hand-painted gold sculptures hang from a 15′ ceiling in a beehive shape that spans over an 8′ x 8′ x 8′ area. Natural airflow from the entrance of the building allows the sculptures to move and gently rotate above the viewer.
Goals
One of the goals of this artwork was to create a show stopping, but tranquil ceiling installation for visitors and staff of Asbury. Another important factor in the overall design was to create a light and floating, yet substantially immersive artwork for viewers.
Process
I collaborated with two people at 2nd Wave Development, both of whom gave me considerable creative freedom to design and create this piece. The only stipulations were a color scheme of whites, creams and golds, to be directly installed into an 8' x 8' ceiling area and finished in 6 months.
