Overview
This international Arts in Health mural was the result of a Mandela Washington Reciprocal Exchange Award sponsored by the U.S. State Department. Sarah Hinds traveled to Nigeria during the summer of 2019 and was hosted by Tender Arts Nigeria and Mandela Washington Fellow Kunle Adewale. The collaboration focused on Arts in Health, a growing field focused on bringing the benefits of creativity to patients, staff and families in the healthcare environment. Sarah collaborated with artists from Tender Arts Nigeria to renovate the Pediatric Ward. She packed along an entire handblown glass installation in her suitcase, which was met with delight!
Goals
Cultural exchange, humanizing the healthcare environment, creating an aesthetically pleasing environment for young patients and their family members, bringing awareness to the arts in health movement in Nigeria
Process
Kunle Adewale and Sarah Hinds collaborated extensively before Sarah traveled, ensuring her time in Nigeria was safe and well spent. Kunle was of great assistance with getting approval for the mural and making necessary arrangements. Special thanks to the U.S. State Department for sponsoring the trip, and to the University of Florida Arts in Medicine Program for sponsoring a portion of the art supplies.
