Overview

5 aluminum totems each 20 ft tall. Designed to accentuate the existing architecture of the building.

Goals

“Ode To Hank” - San Francisco State University Student Center commissioned me to do an interpretation of 5 pieces done twenty years earlier by artist Hank Dericco. The original wood totems strongly referenced much earlier cultures but were extremely decayed. I redesigned and rescaled the pieces, chose aluminum as the new medium, and made the pieces so they would articulate the architecture of the building. I fabricated the pieces using welds, rivets, and 3M Very High Bond architectural tapes. All colored panels are powder-coated. My interpretation maintains cultural references yet clearly reflect a 21st century aesthetic.
