"Flight of Time", 2013, is a 20' x 9' x 13.5' interactive steel installation designed and built for the University and Third, Tucson Modern Streetcar stop in Tucson, Arizona. The stop is located in front of Time Market and was commissioned by the Tucson Pima Arts Council and the Modern Street Car Project. The site specific installation consists of sculptural steel rail with canopy, a Roman numeral clock with a movable hand, a model of the solar system and a movable bird themed clock. The design was influenced by the historic West University neighborhood, streetcars and the passage of time.

The University and Third Modern Streetcar site had very limited space for sculpture so I designed "Flight of Time" to be functional and experiential. It was designed as a sculptural passage way for streetcar passengers. In order to board the train people have to walk up the ramp, use the functional handrail and walk under the sculptural clocks and model of the solar system. The east/west siting of the installation aids in the ever changing shadow play created by light interacting with the decorative rail and sculptural canopy features throughout the day.

This project was a collaboration with the Tucson Pima Arts Council and the engineers and project managers for the Tucson Modern Streetcar Project. I also worked closely with welder and fabricator, Ferrall Clem and CAD designer Terry Rhodes. Prior to finalizing my design I met with the owner of the Time Market deli and held two open meetings for members of the West University Neighborhood Association and local residents. It was important that the final design for the sculptural installation include historically informed features yet still work with the contemporary concept of the electric streetcar.
