Overview
Quest is a fabricated bronze sculpture measuring 11ft 6inH x 4ft 6inW x 2ft 8inD. Sculpture was enlargement from the small cast bronze original maquette. The sculpture was installed in the entrance lobby of Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, New York.
Goals
The goal by the commissioning agency was to create a work of art that would express embrace, in an abstracted manner, the science of Physical and Quantitative Biology and the study of DNA and RNA. Commissioned for the Louis and Beatrice Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology at Stony Brook University. Several cast bronze models were presented and the QUEST model and title were selected. A series of cast bronze models were created, entitled the DNA Series, and the QUEST model was selected for this project.
Process
The collaboration process involved creating twisted and ribbon shapes, enlarged and fabricated from sheet bronze. The artist and excellent fabricators were able to manifest the challenge in metal. Since the time of this creation, other series of sculptures using the twisted and ribbon shapes have been realized on a large scale in bronze and have been extremely popular public sculptures. The movement and expression of these twisted ribbon shapes in a finished sculpture suggests challenge, discovery, inquiry and resolution, all excellent ingredients for public art.
