Client: The Odyssey Cinema

Location: St Albans, United Kingdom

Completion date: 2014

Artwork budget: $20,000

Overview

A new Proscenium was created in the Art Deco style for the Odyssey cinema. This restoration was of a 1930’s Art Deco Cinema (120 sqm).

Goals

The main goal was to be sympathetic to the integrity of the existing design and architectural elements.

Process

The team's key contribution was to interpret this design, prepare it for structural realisation as fretwork panels (in fire-rated mdf 1960 x 2960x18mm), and provide the method of setting out and installation. The fretwork design in fire-rated mdf has been created by the panel fabricators using a large-bed cnc. routing machine from a cad.
file. Each panel has been assembled in-situ from two separate panels with concealed lap joints giving the appearance of a whole unified panel. The panels have been completed in gold paint on a black background.

Additional Information

The Odyssey cinema has been selling out regularly since opening in December 2014. It is a source of great pride to the vision of the local community who saved this iconic building from demolition. A civic award is pending.
