Overview
Portals is a three-part sculpture commissioned by the LA Arts Commission for the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health headquarters on the terrace level of its headquarters. Building design by Gensler Architects.
Goals
In my public works and installations, I approach projects with the awareness that art in public spaces has the potential to expand the breadth of an artist’s work, while also directly engaging with the environment and bringing art to a wider audience. My interest in the access that public art provides stems from my earliest and most formative encounters with art at all; upon leaving my home country as a child to live as a refugee in Italy and then in Washington DC, I was exposed to countless examples of the world’s most treasured artworks simply by being there. It is my intention for these works to open up wider conversations, and to invite reflection on the issues of identity, representation, and inclusion present throughout my work.
