Overview
Tavar Zawacki was commissioned by Artscape in Gothenburg, Sweden to paint the largest public art project of both Artscape’s and Tavar’s careers. Tavar was challenged to create on a massive surface area that measured; 240 meters long by 8 meters tall. A total of 1,920 square meters ( 787 feet long by 26 feet tall = 20,462 sq feet of surface!) Tavar took this opportunity to create (10) different murals, side by side all within the same visual theme of, PAPEL (Paper). When interviewed, Tavar said ‘I wanted to create an exhibition of paintings, similar to how I would present works in a gallery setting, but on a massive scale, outside, and free for anyone to enjoy.’
Goals
Tavar's goal was to paint 10 consistently themed murals spanning the large surface of this boat hanger.
Process
Tavar and his assistant started with projecting the designs onto the length of the hangar. Once all of the 10 different mural designs fit, they started to paint the murals. Exterior paint that was specific for metal (the boat hangars surface) was applied with the aid of an electric airgun.
Additional Information
When completed in September 2022 this was the largest public art project of both, Artscape + Tavar's careers. There were unconfirmed rumors that this mural project was the largest surface area painted in all of the Scandinavian countries.
