Overview
‘Outlook’ is located in the Broadway station along the N/W line of the New York City subway system. There are three different compositions that complete this design. The East Elevation measures 8.5 ft. by 60ft., the West Elevation measures 8.5 ft. by 60ft., and the South Elevation measures 8.5 ft. by 15ft. The project material is hand-painted laminated architectural glass.
Goals
‘Outlook’ for the Broadway station is an imaginary, saturated, color-filled landscape that references the past and present of the neighborhood surrounding the elevated station. The laminated glass artwork highlights the native flora in the area, and the deciduous woodlands, ponds, swamps, wetlands, meadows, and conifer forests that were once dominant features in the location. The palette choices for ‘Outlook’ are inspired by the current colors visible in the neighborhood, including those found in the existing architecture, storefronts, restaurants and public spaces. Peters Studios translated original paintings into hand-painted glass to be integrated into the station facades and windows.
Process
This project was commissioned by MTA Art & Design. The original paintings were translated into hand-painted glass by working closely with Peters Glass. Each panel replicates the exact color, composition and brushwork of the original paintings.
