Overview

One Thousand Suns is a dynamic sculptural shade canopy that establishes a lively collective focal point for Downtown Sunnyvale and reflects the incredible diversity of Sunnyvale’s residents and visitors. By supporting the artwork with four clusters of slender columns, the artwork creates an open, shaded and inviting space for people to fluidly move through on a daily basis. The artwork is constructed using custom and standardized stainless steel tubing and colorful acrylic lenses. The lenses create a series of light effects on the ground, tracking the time of day and creating playful shadows on the ground.

Goals

One Thousand Suns is part of the urban realm, traversed daily by residents and visitors. Located on a particularly wide pedestrian median, the artwork offers a moment for pause as people move across the street. It compels drivers and pedestrians to slow down and marks the gateway into the newly redeveloped neighborhood of Cityline, in Sunnyvale, CA. The artwork celebrates pedestrian movement and anchors the midpoint of a long residential and commercial block.
