Overview
This colorful, undulating glass sculpture is situated on Marine View Drive in downtown Des Moines, Washington, a community and marina on Puget Sound. Many boaters keep boats here, and the public fishing pier and beach attract people from many cultures and walks of life, so the sculpture serves to welcome those who arrive in Des Moines, and share some of its maritime culture.
Goals
The Des Moines Arts Commission put out a call for artists to design pieces that would be installed throughout the downtown area. Many of the pieces reflect the proximity of Des Moines to the water, and using a medium like glass that allows for depth, reflection and fluidity, as well as creating a creature from the marine environment seemed like a good idea.
Process
GCSS worked carefully with the Arts Commission to create a piece that would be both safe from the elements, and not easily damaged by pedestrians.
Additional Information
This project was inspired by George's sighting of a seal catching and eating an octopus off of the Des Moines fishing pier.
